About the Book

  • I grew up listening to my mom bemoan everything from the size of her thighs to the shape of her eyes. So you can imagine my dismay the first time someone exclaimed, 'You look just like your mother!'

So begins You'd Be So Pretty If...: Teaching Our Daughters to Love Their Bodies -- Even When We Don't Love Our Own (Da Capo Lifelong Books, May 2009), former Shape magazine columnist Dara Chadwick's guide to breaking the mother-daughter cycle of bad body image. With humor and compassion, Chadwick uses her own story -- as well as those of the women and girls she interviewed -- to reveal everything from what girls learn when mom diets to the trigger words that can set off a body image crisis. You'd Be So Pretty If... offers fresh and useful strategies to help you build a strong body image foundation for your daughter -- even if your own body is far from what you'd consider "perfect."

Great interview! Locker Room Diaries is so good. It's wonderful to see people embrace their bodies and appreciate all parts of themselves.

First - great interview! Locker Room Diaries has long been one of my most favorite books. I love Leslie and her writing and her honesty!

Second - DARA!! How did I not know you have a book coming out?!? This is fantastic news, girl! Please keep me posted on it. I'm dying to read it. I'd love to interview you for my site too to help promote it:)

Thanks, everybody. I wholeheartedly agree on Leslie's awesomeness and I'm touched by your kind words.

That was a great interview. I can relate to the body image issues completely but it came internally..I don't remember my parents saying anything to me good or bad about my body- just remember comparing myself to others all the time.

Looking forward to your book as well, Dara!

Thanks, Fit Mommy!

great interview,thank you!

I can totally relate to that stage of being mean to my mom, and now that I am a mom it breaks my heart when I think of the stuff I said!
Now, I wish I could spend more time hanging out with my mom.
