If you're a regular reader of this blog, you know that I'm committed to living as healthy a lifestyle as I can -- without going to extreme measures. I do exercise just about every day, but I no longer spend two hours at the gym as I did during my Shape magazine days. I also try to eat healthfully, but I'm not one to turn down a cookie or a piece of cake.
Mostly, I seek balance every day. But lately, I've noticed the balance shifting. A busier-than-usual schedule has left me feeling out of whack. Here's what I've noticed:
- I'm not getting enough sleep.
- I'm drinking too much coffee.
- I'm not planning what I'm going to eat, resulting in too many less-than-stellar choices.
- I'm doing the "same old, same old" exercise routine.
And I just don't feel good.
It's not about the scale (I don't own one). It's not about my clothes (everything still fits). It's not about how I look (though I'll admit my wardrobe could use some sprucing up).
It's about how I feel.
After all this time, I've learned to listen to my body. And mine is telling me that it's time to get back to basics: More water. A more challenging exercise routine. More fruits, vegetables and lean protein. More sleep. Less stress.
It sounds like a lot, but it really isn't. It's just a matter of re-grouping. Last night, I sat down and looked at the week ahead to determine where I have some pockets of time to try a new class. Today's task is to actually find a new class or two (I'm thinking of spin. Has anyone tried it?).
I also spent yesterday afternoon planning some meals for the week. It's a busy one, so I also spent some time doing some prep work to make healthy eating easier (I chopped vegetables, browned meat, boiled eggs and baked banana bread). It may sound like a lot of work, but honestly, it was relaxing and gave me a great sense of relief to feel like I was already ahead of the coming week.
I do this every once in a while: Take a look at the big picture and see what I can do to both feel better and make things easier on myself.
How about you? What are your tips for shaking things up?

YOU'VE NEVER TRIED SPIN?
Do it. It will change your life. Okay maybe not quite that drastic but it's class I sweat the most in and keeps me coming back at least once a week.
Try different instructors at your gym, there are lots of different styles and you may work better with different people! Have fun!

I agree with Mackenzie, Spin is SO MUCH FUN!
You do want to show up early for your first class, though, and see if the instructor can help you adjust the bike. Otherwise you may be in for a painful ride.
But, man, it is a great workout, you can take it at your own pace, and the time flies by!
Let us know how you like it!

I miss Spinning! I used to go every day when I taught English abroad--it was my sanity!!
I know what you mean, though, Dara, about just not feeling good. For me, it's been about not flexing my resistance muscles and still buying junk I banned years ago. I don't know where this entitlement came from but these size 30 jeans are not going to fit if I keep it up!

I think finding things that motivate you like cooking and a class you enjoy help witht eh motivation. If I'm enjoying my healthy lifestyle I'm not as tempted to stay up late and overdose on coffee.
Just get back to what you loved about life. That doesn't mean same-old,same-old that means the little things like exciting food and exercies.

It's ALWAYS about how we feel, isn't it?!
When that happens to me, I go grocery shopping and restock my kitchen with healthier fare. It makes me feel motivated.

Works for me, too, Sagan!

Mackenzie and Alyssa, I have not tried spin [hangs head in shame]. But I'm going to!
Cynthia, thanks for stopping by. It's nice to meet you!
Melissa, just the very act of starting to eat better has already made me feel much better.
