About the Book

  • I grew up listening to my mom bemoan everything from the size of her thighs to the shape of her eyes. So you can imagine my dismay the first time someone exclaimed, 'You look just like your mother!'

So begins You'd Be So Pretty If...: Teaching Our Daughters to Love Their Bodies -- Even When We Don't Love Our Own (Da Capo Lifelong Books, May 2009), former Shape magazine columnist Dara Chadwick's guide to breaking the mother-daughter cycle of bad body image. With humor and compassion, Chadwick uses her own story -- as well as those of the women and girls she interviewed -- to reveal everything from what girls learn when mom diets to the trigger words that can set off a body image crisis. You'd Be So Pretty If... offers fresh and useful strategies to help you build a strong body image foundation for your daughter -- even if your own body is far from what you'd consider "perfect."

I love to wear dresses and skirts. I wear them a few times a week. It makes me feel feminine and pretty! Plus, I am much more comfortable in something like that than I am in shorts.

I think the last time I dressed up just for me was when I was 6 and playing with my mother's clothes.
Wow, that's kinda sad, lol!

I wear a lot of dresses during the summer because they are so much cooler than jeans/trousers...and shorts just aren't gonna happen anymore. I got a bunch that are so comfortable I call them "dress sweat suits.." They look good, easy to toss on and I am every bit as comfy in them as I am in a track suit...Add pair of strappy little sandals? I think I'm looking okay (winter is still a challenge since I get COLD...gotta work the tights angle more..)

I have to admit, I never feel good about myself dressed up. I feel like a big old fat awkward blimp.

Part of it is because mom and saleswomen keep insisting on putting me in 18s and 22s when I'd rather be wearing 26s. I like my clothing baggy. The other is the fact I'm just not comfortable crossing my legs.

I'd rather just wear jeans and a sloppy-big blouse or t-shirt.

Love the idea! When I was a high school and college student, I dressed up on exam days. It always gave me a very confident feel and i liked having that feeling, especially walking into a calculus exam. This year, I've been addicted to the summer dress-- they just feel cooler to me than anything else and it's been such a hot summer.

Thanks for all the great comments, everybody. I love hearing all these dress stories. Jami, I have to admit I'm more comfortable in jeans, too!

I wore a dress just yesterday! That's a fun idea. Last year my sister made a vow that she wouldn't wear pants all summer, hehe, so we have quite a few dresses between the two of us. And you know, some of my dresses are quite fancy, but I find that if I wear shoes that are simple, it really brings down the fancy-ness. The dress I was wearing the other day was one I originally bought to attend a wedding. I figure, why have "fancy" clothes when we only wear them a few times in our lives? Might as well put them to use!
